The young prince recalls the character\nof the Tanjore missionary. H. Pearson, Memoirs of the Life and\nCorrespondence of the Rev. Christian Swartz. Vol. II pp. 407-408.\nI had the pleasure to receive, in due time, your letter of the 20th\nJanuary, 1834, together with your valuable present of a Memoir,\nin two volumes, of the Reverend Father Swartz; and most heartily\nthank you for the same.\nThough indeed a faithful and detailed narrative of the life of\nthat apostolic missionary must prove highly interesting to the public\nat large; yet I beg to assure you, that you could not have selected\na person who would have received such a present from you with a\ngreater avidity than I have done. My perusal of this work has\nawakened many a most greatful recollection of incidents which\nmy respected father was in the habit of reciting most enthusiastically,\nas indubitable instances of the disinterested affection that the vene-\nrable Mr. Swartz had entertained, and on several occasions mani-\nfested towards him, as well as of his pious and philanthropic exer-\ntions for the moral improvement of his fellow creatures, whether\nnatives or Europeans. His virtues and qualifications either as a\nclergy man or a politician, exercised at a time when there existed\nvery little encouragement, must ever remain objects of emulation\nto rising generations\n89.\nCONTROVERSY BETWEEN C.M.S MISSIONARIES\nAND SYRIAN CHRISTIAN LEADERS: BISHOP WILSON'S\nPROPOSALS (1835 A.D.)\nBishop Wilson made the following proposals to end the dispute\nbetween the C.M.S. Missionaries in Kerala and the Syrian Christian\nleaders. They were not acceptable to the Syrians. Cited in F. E.\nKeay, A History of the Syrian Church in India, pp. 81-82.\n1. The Metran should as a general rule only ordain those who\nhad passed through the college at Kottayam and had obtained\ncertificates of proficiency in learning and of good conduct.\n2. Accounts showing the produce of the land and other\nproperty belonging to the Church should be submitted annually\nto the Resident, so that none should be misappropriated, alienated\nor lost.\n3. A permanent endowment should, if possible, be substituted\nfor uncertain fees.",
