This man expressed,\nwithout reserve, the doubts which other heathens entertain; from\nwhich it appears that the errors of Spinoza are not unknown in\nIndia. Indeed they are not new, having been long since noticed\nand refuted in Eccles. iii. 19-21, and in the book of Wisdom, ii.1-3.\nA heathen said to Swartz, 'If I become a Christian, how shall\nI be maintained?' He replied, 'Work and pray.' The Gospel of\nSt. Matthew was given to him, and his first opening it, he lighted on\nthe passage, chap. vi. 31-33 Take no thought, saying, what shall\nwe eat, &c. for after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your\nheavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.\nBut seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and\nall these things shall be added unto you.' This singular coincidence\nmade a deep impression.\nA Hindoo inquired whether there were any worldly advantages,\nsuch as money or rice, to be gained by embracing our religion.\nSwartz lamented his earthly mind, and informed him that the\nmissionaries were not come to support the idle, but to show all the\nway to obtain incorruptible blessings. Another said, 'If I become\na Christian, I shall be called an apostate, who has crept into another\ncaste.' Swartz told him, that heathen unbelievers belonged to the\ncaste of the devil; but that the family of God, into which those\nare adopted who believe the gospel, is 'a chosen generation, a\nroyal priesthood; a peculiar people.'\n57. THE TRADITION OF ST. THOMAS IN THE\nMOZARABIC BREVIARY (1775 A.D.)\nThe Latin text of the Mozarabic Breviary was edited and published\nby Cardinal Lorenzana in 1775. The English text is a translation by\nWestcott. It gives evidence concerning the tradition of St. Thomas in\nIndia and the translation of his relics to Edessa. Cited in H. Hosten,\nAntiquities from San Thome and Mylapore, pp. 283-285.\n2. Amongst the brethren famous far, thine own Apostle true,\nSaint Thomas, touched the sacred scar and doubting not, his\nSaviour knew.\n3. A herald comes from India's shore to seek a builder wise;\nSearching in every market store, for cunning architect he\nspies.\n4.\n'My servant Thomas,' said the Lord, a faithful builder he.\n'I give thee: take. The glorious word Abbanes heard,\nand took with glee.",
