AND\nANGLICAN CHURCHES (1920 A.D.)\nFollowing the publication of the Tranquebar Manifesto a meeting\nof presentatives of the South India United Church and the Anglican\nChurch met in Bangalore in March, 1920, to discuss the question\nof union. Their joint statement, reproduced here, accepts the Manifesto\nposition on episcopacy and defines the nature of the autonomy of the\nproposed united church. Cited in A. J. Arangadan, Church Union\nin South India, its Progress and Consummation, p. 16.\n1. We believe that the principle of the Historic Episcopate in\na constitutional form is that which is more likely than any other to\npromote and preserve the unity of the Church; therefore, we\naccept it as a basis of union without raising other questions about\nsepiscopacy.\n2. By Constitutional Episcopacy we mean :-\n(a) that the Bishops shall be elected by representatives of\nthe province.\n(b) that the Bishops shall perform their duties constitutio-\nnally in accordance with such customs of the Church as shall be\ndefinited in a written constitution.\n(c) that the continuity with the Historic Episcopate will be\neffectively maintained, it being understood that no particular inter-\npretation of the Historic Episcopate be demanded.\n3. We are agreed that after union all future ordinations to\nthe Presbyterate would be performed by the laying on of hands\nof the Bishops and Presbyters; and that all consecrations of Bishops\nwould be performed by Bishops, not less than three taking part in\neach consecration.\n4. By autonomy in the resultant Church we mean :-\n(a) that the Church in India ought to be independent of\nthe State.\n(b) that the Church in India must be free from any control,\nlegal or otherwise, of any Church or society outside India.\n(c) that, while the Church in India is free from such control,\nit would regulate its actions by the necessity of maintaining fellow-\nship with other branches of the Catholic Church with which we\nare now in communion.\nWith reference to the question of the equality of the ministry,\nit was recorded that the S.I.U.C. makes it a condition of union that\nits present ministers (Presbyters) shall after union be recognised\nas ministers (Presbyters) without re-ordination.",
